PIANO
The piano is a musical instrument of the string family, although the piano can be considered both a string and
percussion instrument. The piano is believed to have been invented in approximately 1700. The piano has a keyboard (a row of keys)
that is struck by the pianist's fingers and thumbs. The keys cause the hammers to strike the strings and create sound. The piano is the most commonly played instrument by musicians in the world, and it is used in a
variety of music styles including classical, pop, jazz, rock, blues, folk,
country, and many more. Bartolomeo
Cristofori is credited with the invention of the piano. There are a
variety of piano types today including the grand piano, upright piano, specialized piano, the electric piano, and the digital piano.

The keys of pianos have been
made of a variety of woods over time including sugar pine, spruce, ebony,
basswood and plastic. Pianos
have a total of 88 black and white keys. The piano has the widest range
of tones of all instruments. Famous pianists include Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Billy
Joel, Liberace, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elton John, Martha Argerich, Chopin, and Myra
Hess.

BANJO
The banjo is a musical instrument from the string family. The banjo emerged among African slaves in the 1600s in
America. The banjo became popular in the 1800s. It is commonly used
in folk, bluegrass, and country music. Modern banjos come
with four or five strings. The first white banjo player to learn
from African Americans was Joel Walker Sweeney. Banjos are
traditionally made with a frame, neck, and a head made of animal skin
although plastic is more common now. Early banjos were made of a gourd shell,
wood stick neck, and strings. Banjos became extremely popular during the
jazz age. The five-string banjo is the most popular. The dueling
banjo piece in the 1972 movie Deliverance was actually recorded with a guitar and a banjo. It is
still one of the most famous banjo pieces known to the general public. Four-string banjos include the plectrum banjo, tenor banjo, cello banjo, and
the bass and contraband banjos. Some famous banjoists
include Steve Martin (actor, comedian, and Grammy-winning musician), George
Crumb, Paul Elwood. The modern banjo was invented by Joel
Sweeney in the1800s.
